Move over russet and orange sweet potatoes, there's a new guy in town! Japanese sweet potatoes have become my favorite potato.
Once I air fried these potatoes for the first time, I was hooked. They not only taste amazing, but they really hold their crunch. You would think these fries were actually... well... fried!
What is the difference between a regular sweet potato and a Japanese sweet potato?
Japanese sweet potatoes basically taste like if a white potato and an orange sweet potato had a baby. They have a subtly sweet flavor and nutty flavor which I love! They are purple on the outside and a milky yellow color on the inside. I purchase mine at Trader Joe's, but most major supermarkets sell them.
Can you eat the skin of a Japanese sweet potato?
Yes! You know I always leave the skin on all of my potato recipes. That's where all the fiber is.
The seasoning mix takes these fries over the top. I toss the potatoes in sesame oil and furikake seasoning for the best asian inspired fries. Furikake seasoning is another Trader Joe's purchase.
What is furikake seasoning made of?
Furikake seasoning contains sesame seeds, seaweed and salt.
How to cut Japanese Sweet Potatoes into fries?
Of course, make sure your potato is washed and dried. First, cut the ends off. Then, cut the potato down the middle. Lastly, cut each half into 4 fries. It's as easy as that! Make sure to cut the fries into equal sizes so they cook evenly.

Japanese Sweet Potato Fries
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 5 small Japanese sweet potatoes cut into fries (refer to the image and directions above in the post to learn how to cut the potatoes)
- 1 ½ tablespoons sesame oil
- 1 ½ tablespoons furikake seasoning
Instructions
- Toss the cut potatoes into a bowl with sesame oil and furikake seasoning.
- Use your hands to make sure the potatoes are coated in the oil and seasoning.
- Place the potatoes in the air fryer in an even layer. You may need to make this recipe in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Air fry at 350 degrees F for 15-20 minutes or until crispy and cooked through.
- If desired, sprinkle with extra furikake seasoning when they are done.
- Note, I didn't use salt in this recipe because there is salt in the furikake seasoning. If you like your fries on the salty side, add some sea salt into the bowl with the potatoes, oil and furikake seasoning.
