Protein granola is made with your favorite protein powder and egg white. The addition of the egg white helps to form large granola clusters!
I created this recipe a couple of years ago and finally got around to updating the post. When I remade the recipe, I remembered how delicious it was.
Seriously, I think this is my favorite granola recipe of all time! I've made two batches in less than one week.
Meal prep this granola to enjoy in yogurt bowls, as cereal with milk or just to munch on as a snack. I'll admit... lately, I've been grabbing a handful out of the pantry and eating it as is.
2 reasons why you'll love this recipe
- This granola recipe yields large granola clusters!
- The recipe only calls for three tablespoons of pure honey as an added sweetener. Most granola recipes contain ½ cup or more of added sweetener.
Ingredients in this recipe
- old fashioned rolled oats - I always recommend old fashioned rolled oats over quick oats for granola.
- chopped nuts of choice - Use your favorite nut or use a mix of nuts. Go NUTS! You could also use seeds instead. Pumpkin seeds would be great!
- vanilla protein powder - I used vanilla whey protein powder.
- ground cinnamon
- olive oil - You can also use avocado oil or melted coconut oil.
- egg white - Don't skip this. The egg white helps to create granola clusters.
- pure honey - You can also use pure maple syrup, but I love honey because of the way it caramelizes in the oven.
Expert Tips
Make sure you enjoy the taste of the protein powder you use!
Spread granola onto a baking sheet with parchment paper in an even layer. This will allow it to cook evenly.
Baking the granola at 325 degrees F compared to 350 degrees F helps to achieve perfectly cooked granola.
Gently flip the granola halfway through. This will keep the granola from burning. Be careful not to break the clumps or you won't end up with any granola clusters.
Allow the granola to fully cool before enjoying. It will crisp up as it cools.
You can use collagen peptides in place of the protein powder in this recipe. Replace the amount of protein powder with 2 scoops of collagen. I like using vanilla flavored collagen. I noticed that the granola can burn faster when using collagen so just keep an eye on it. I baked it for less time.
How long does homemade granola last?
Store the granola in an airtight container at room temperature for about 4 weeks or store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Just made this and love the results. Next time, I will bake it a bit longer since I love the dark crunchy parts the best. Will definitely make again...and again!

Paula
What would you sub for egg whites to make vegan? Thx!
krista
Hi Paula! You can try flax eggs, but I cannot guarantee the same texture as I never personally tried.
Lindsey
How much is a serving tho it doesn’t say??
krista
I don't have the math done for that. I guess add all the ingredients (convert to grams) and then divide by the number of servings.

Can I put coconut oil instead of the olive oil?

Ok, I know I’m a repeat-commenter but had to say again how much I love this recipe. I made it today with extra nuts and more Christmas-like spices:plus a few dried cherries after it cooled. It’ll be a part of a holiday goodie bag for my postal carrier and trash guys. Sure to be a hit. Thanks, Krista!
Theresa
Would love if nutritional information was listed with your recipes.

Hi Henny, I am unsure as this recipe is not meant to be grain-free. I haven't tried making the granola without oats. Let us know if you try!

I have made your protein granola 3 times so far and love it. Tried agave syrup once because I was out of honey which was great too. Also added nut butter instead of avocado oil once too. Shared your sight with my friends as well. So good! Thanks for so many great recipes.
krista
Thank you so much, Denise! I am so happy you love the granola and I appreciate your support! 🙂

Would boxed egg whites work for this?
krista
Yes.
Judy
Can it be frozen or how do I store it?
krista
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for about 2 weeks or store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Monisha
Could you use Maple Syrup or coconut sugar instead of honey ?
krista
I recommend using a liquid sweetener. Pure maple syrup should work fine.
Maria
Can I use Vital Proteins collagen powder instead of protein powder?
krista
This should be fine but I recommend adding more sweetener if it's unflavored.
Sarah
I added trilogy health seeds(flex, chia, and hemp) as I am breast feeding and wanted to add an additional boost for lactation(oats are great for it too) it’s in the oven now and I can’t wait to try it.
krista
Enjoy!!
Jenn
This recipe is excellent! I ate half of the pan before I forced myself to put it away!
krista
I actually just ate some too! 🙂
Kellie
Just wanted to comment to say that we make this recipe almost every week for our family! It’s easy enough that it isn’t a real time commitment and now we never buy granola at the store. Even my kids love how this granola tastes!
krista
Amazing to hear! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and rating, Kellie. 🙂
Peggy
I’ve made 3 or 4 batches of this now. I don’t seem to get as many big chunks as I’d like but I still love it!
krista
💛💛
Glynnis
Fantastic I added ground flax. It was perfect. I will make it again.
krista
Great addition! 🙂
Glynnis
Loved it. I made this for my Greek yogurt. My husband loves it. He eats as a snack so it does not last long at all.
krista
YAY! 🙂
Mary
Hi Krista - Have you tried to double the amount of protein in this before? Like double the protein powder or more egg whites? I'd be aiming to increase the protein without increasing the fat content.
krista
I'm not sure if you could double the protein without changing the texture or flavor.
Julie
Great taste but unfortunately I’ve tried over the years to like all different kinds of protein powders but they all hurt my stomach.
Is there anyway to leave the protein powder out and maybe just up the liquid egg whites ?
krista
You will have to play around with the measurements a bit. If you increase the egg whites, you will need to add more oats otherwise the mixture will be too wet.
Stacey
Love this recipe I make a double batch every week, however, I substitute walnut oil or grapeseed oil for the olive oil .
krista
So glad you enjoy this granola! 🙂
Maruschka
Hi Krista, thank you for this! how grams would a serving be?
krista
I don't have the math done for that. I guess add all the ingredients (convert to grams) and then divide by the number of servings.
Megan Shaw
So delicious!! Will definitely be making this again and again!
krista
Yay!!!
Jennifer
Love this granola recipe and make it all the time!
krista
Yay!!
Brandi St. Clair
I love the flavor and adding in the protein powder. However I never got any big chunks and followed the recipe exactly. I think next time I will double or triple the egg whites since it seemed to be far too dry to form clumps.
krista
Hmmm interesting. Not sure why the mixture would be dry. Maybe it's the type of protein powder. Make sure you check out the section labeled "Expert Tips."
Trisha Cahill
With egg whites in it, can this be left out or does it need to be refrigerated?
krista
Hi Trisha, I recommend storing the granola in an airtight container at room temperature for about 2 weeks or store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Vanessa
Made this last night and it is fantastic!! Its going in my recipe book with my other fav recipes!! Sooo much better than store bought.
krista
Yay! 🙂
Rebecca McCabe
This is a new favourite! I made this recipe this morning and I was not disappointed. Yum, yum!
krista

TLynn :)
i've made this before and it's always my go-to for granola....I actually make care packages and use this to send off to my nephews to snack on.....it's great on yogurt bowls or on top of ice-cream.
You can substitute the protein powder for powdered peanut flour and it's great as well.
krista
Awesome! I love reading comments like this! Thank you for taking the time to share. 🙂
Beth
I love big chunks in my granola, so I was excited about this and thought the addition of egg white was a great option. Unfortunately, it turned out pretty dry and crumbly for me - even though I added extra honey and let it get extra brown.
krista
I can’t say exactly what went wrong, but I recommend using exact ingredients and following exact instructions for best results.
Luisana
Yummy recipe thank you so much! I used coconut oil, toasted coconut flakes, unsweetened chocolate chips, diced natural almonds, instead of honey I used sugar free Caryl’s syrup (ran out of honey, but definitely trying it later)
Left it with the oven off for 10 more minutes and it it’s perfect!
krista
Love those additions!!
Sue
I am a weekly granola baker. I thought I would never find a recipe to rival my favourites. This was VERY good. I’m trying to increase protein in my daily intake and this with bluebs and Greek yoghurt is delicious.
krista
I’m so happy! 🙂
