Air Fryer Sesame Chicken is healthy, delicious and tastes just like the real deal! The chicken breast is air fried until crispy and coated in an incredible sticky sauce.

This is hands down one of my best recipes! It literally tastes deep fried with VERY minimal oil. And... don't get me started on the sauce. I could probably drink it...
Something that sets my air fryer chicken apart is my use of cassava flour opposed to all purpose flour or cornstarch. The cassava flour creates a beautiful crust around the chicken breast and I also use it to thicken the sauce.
You can purchase cassava flour at any major grocery store or check out the link HERE to grab it on Amazon!

How to serve air fryer sesame chicken?
You can serve Air Fryer Sesame Chicken over white rice, brown rice, quinoa or cauliflower rice!
Expert Tips
- Cut your chicken into the same size pieces for even cooking.
- Air fry the chicken in batches if you have a smaller air fryer. You do not want to stack the pieces on top of one another.
- Make the sauce while the chicken is cooking. Don't make the sauce in advance because it will become thicker and thicker as it sits.
- I recommend using avocado oil spray for air frying. It makes life so much easier. I purchase mine from Primal Kitchen. Use code "frozenbananas" at checkout for a discount!

Air Fryer Sesame Chicken
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
Ingredients for the Chicken
- 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast (cut into 1 ½ inch pieces)
- ½ cup cassava flour
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon milk of choice
- 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
- 2 teaspoons sliced scallions
- avocado oil spray
Ingredients for the Sauce
- 1 tablespoon cassava flour
- 2 tablespoons water
- ½ tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 large diced garlic clove
- ⅛ - ¼ teaspoon dried crushed chili flakes
- ½ cup chicken/beef bone broth or veggie/chicken/beef stock
- 1 tbsp honey
- 3 tablespoons coconut aminos, tamari or soy sauce
- ½ tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
Instructions
- Set up three mixing bowls. Place the cut chicken breast in the first bowl. In the second bowl, beat eggs and milk together. In the third bowl, add cassava flour with salt, pepper, garlic powder and combine.
- Coat each piece of chicken in the egg mixture and then the flour mixture. Remove chicken one at a time and transfer into an air fryer sprayed with avocado oil. Do not overcrowd the air fryer with the chicken. Make this recipe in batches if needed.
- Once you place the chicken in the air fryer, spray avocado oil over the top of the chicken. Air fry at 375 degrees F for about 12-15 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165 degrees F.
- Now, it's time to make the sauce while the chicken is cooking. In a small bowl, make a slurry. This is the mixture that will thicken the sauce. Whisk together 1 tablespoon of cassava flour and 2 tablespoons of water. Set this aside.
- In a pan, brown diced garlic in sesame oil. Add in chili flakes, bone broth, honey and coconut aminos, apple cider vinegar and ground ginger. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Lower the heat, add the slurry mixture in a little at a time and whisk. Whisk until the mixture begins to thicken. Once the mixture is thick, remove from the heat.
- Once the chicken is cooked, toss it into the pan with sauce and coat. Serve the chicken as you please (white rice, brown rice, quinoa or cauliflower rice). Top with sesame seeds and sliced scallion!

hello! cassava flour is hard to find where i live and it can be very expensive so will using cornstarch instead be a problem?
krista
Hi! I haven't used cornstarch in this recipe so I can't say that you will achieve the same exact results. Let us know if you try!
Kara
I’ve made this recipe 3 times now but I haven’t had the time to leave a comment. This is a MUST MAKE if you like sesame chicken. It’s a very easy to follow recipe and it comes out like real takeout but it’s much healthier. Thank you!
krista
What a beautiful comment to read! Thank you, Kara. 🙂

Do you think you could make it on the stove if you’re making a lot of chicken? The air fryer would take too long for 3 pounds of chicken
krista
Yes, but it definitely will not have the same crispy texture.
Olivia
Is there a way to make this without an air fryer or cassava flour? I have arrowroot powder if that would work
krista
I don't think it would come out as crispy, but you could place it in the oven or fry it in a little oil in a pan. I haven't tried arrowroot powder so I can't guarantee the same results.
